Ben & Brooke
– Missouri –
It all started with Charlie, Brooke’s little havanese dog, that became the topic of conversation while she was walking him in Boulder, Colorado. Luckily for me, the other person in the conversation was an old college lacrosse teammate of mine, who made sure that I met her on my next visit out there. We immediately hit it off - undoubtedly due to my impressive Guitar Hero skills and our inability to focus on anyone else throughout the day and evening. I left Boulder the next day but we couldn’t stop talking to each other, and within a month Brooke came back to visit me in St. Louis. By the end of the trip, she was ready to head back to the Midwest and start a new chapter with me. We’ve been together ever since.
By Brooke: When I first met Ben, over 6 years ago, he instantly brought a smile to my face with his great sense of humor. Ben is the funniest and kindest person I have ever met. Everyday I am proud to be his wife. Ben’s character is apparent through his several years coaching Lacrosse where he not only taught the sport of Lacrosse but most importantly helped develop high school teens into courteous, gracious, and polite young men. In some situations, on the field, Ben has been the only positive male role model to several young teens and I know that he will be that and more for our children.
Brooke is the most supportive and trustworthy person I know, and is my best friend. She always seeks to do the right thing and make everyone around her happy. My love for her only deepened when I came to grasp the overwhelmingly strong family she came from and the basic values of trust, understanding and love that emanated from the family in the cherry orchards around Leelanau County, Michigan, where she comes from. She is a warm and welcoming woman who is naturally a nurturing person to children and others. She has spent several years working with children and has great strategies and methods that help children and their development. Brooke is an amazing mom and wife.
We come from deep Midwestern roots - albeit on other sides of Lake Michigan - that have called us back to the region after years of time spent living throughout the United States and Europe. Whether it is Ben’s childhood spent in Chicago or Brooke’s spent in the cherry orchards of Northern Michigan, we believe in the eternal promise of our home region.
William Finn may have a future career in stand-up comedy. He seems to have inherited his namesake’s (Brooke’s late father, Bill) love of making people laugh. He brings joy to everyone in the room, whether it’s friends and family watching him chuckle to himself or passersby on a busy Reykjavik street amused by the faces he makes out a restaurant window. He loves to hug his friends and family, and is a quick learner. Thanks to Brooke’s teaching experience, our home resembles a Montessori classroom, where Finn is encouraged to develop independence and critical thinking in a calm and structured environment.
