Emily & Marcus

– Michigan –

Introduction

We’re Emily and Marcus from Michigan. We’re high school sweethearts who have been married for 11 years. We always knew that adoption would be part of our story, but when we struggled with infertility we decided not to wait another day! We’re now home study approved and on the path to grow our family through adoption.

About Emily

Emily is 35 years old. She grew up in a small Michigan town, the youngest of several older half-siblings. She loved dancing and took dance classes from Kindergarten until her senior year of high school. Emily holds a Bachelor’s degree in Education and has been working in the field of Early Childhood Education for almost 13 years. She loves working with children and currently spends her days with preschoolers, ages 2 1⁄2-5. When she’s not teaching, Emily enjoys cooking, reading, yoga, researching her family history, and most recently, painting. Emily can’t wait for the opportunity to be a stay-at-home parent.

Marcus is 36 years old and is the youngest in his family of three children. Marcus was born in Michigan but moved to Texas as an infant and lived there for 10 years before moving back to Michigan. Throughout his younger years, Marcus enjoyed playing sports and participating in local theater. Marcus holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and, after serving in the U.S. Army for 6 years, found his passion in the field of robotics. He now works as a robotics engineer. When Marcus isn’t working, he enjoys woodworking, video games, cooking, disc golf, and making Emily laugh.

Our Story

Our Story

OUR HOME

We have lived in our current home for 3 years. It is a two-story, 3-bedroom house in a quiet and well-established neighborhood; it’s spacious, with plenty of room for our family to grow, well-cared for, and thoughtfully decorated in our casual and cozy style. Our house was built in the mid-1990s and we’ve enjoyed doing some updating, with plans for more updates in the future. We love our neighborhood for its diversity (with families of all ages and races), the care and maintenance of homes nearby, and its close proximity to our neighborhood park and playground. Some of our favorite areas of our home include the kitchen, where we enjoy cooking together, the living room wood-burning fireplace, and the spacious backyard where we often play yard games with friends and neighbors.

OUR NURSERY

Our nursery continues to be a work in progress as we await the arrival of our little one. We are little by little accumulating all the necessities we’ll need along with some extra special details, like the handmade blanket given to us by Emily’s mom and artwork created from the pages of a favorite children’s book. We want the nursery to have meaningful touches and be a calm and restful place. Marcus also has plans to build a crib that will grow with our child.

OUR FAMILY

Family time is important to us and, although many from our families live far away, we try as much as we can to see them often. Emily’s mom and sister and Marcus’s brother and sister-in-law live out of state, along with several nieces and nephews who we stay close with via phone and video call. We both also have some family close by, including Marcus’s mom, step-father and sister, her husband and two more of our nephews. We love getting together for fun family outings and meals, on holidays, and for special celebrations. We can’t wait for our baby to play and grow with his/her cousins!

OUR PETS

We have one dog, Teddy who has been a special part of our family for a little over 2 years. We adopted him from a dog rescue when he was a year old. Dogs are a big part of our lives – before Teddy we had two other dogs, Radar and Zoey for 10 years. We love spending time outside with Teddy, taking him for long walks and on road trips, and spoiling him with toys and treats. He’s a sweet, sometimes rambunctious, but extra loving little guy and we know he’ll make the best big dog brother!

OUR STORY

We first met in the fifth grade when Marcus moved to Emily’s hometown. We shared many of the same friends in middle and high school and often spent time hanging out together. In the summer before our Junior year of high school, we started dating, and the rest is history! We attended the same college, were engaged during our final year, and were married just before Marcus’s deployment to Iraq in 2006. Our life together has been filled with adventure, lots of laughter, and many ups and downs, but we wouldn’t have it any other way!
