Kate & Scott

– Illinois –

Introduction

Thank you for considering placing your child with adoptive parents, and for taking the time to learn about us. We struggled for many years with infertility, and that process felt like a roller coaster ride. When we decided to grow our family through adoption, it brought with it the excitement we felt when we first decided to start a family, but we also understand this is a big decision for you. We promise to love and protect your child, to always be grateful for the life we share together, to provide a warm home, a great education, and an extended family ready to welcome a new baby with love. We want to be a part of this story with you in whatever way works best.

About Scott

Family: Scott grew up in Indiana with his parents and older sister. His family lives in Washington, D.C. now, including our two nieces (5 and 3 years old). DC is one of Scott’s favorite cities and we always have fun when we get to visit. Scott’s grandparents and many aunts, uncles and cousins live in the Chicagoland area. New great-grandchildren in the family make for energetic and love-filled holiday gatherings.

Occupation: Scott is a chef and a food photographer. He works for a company that develops meal kits people can cook at home. He cooks the meals and takes photos for the company’s products and website. He truly enjoys cooking, which means we have delicious meals at home, too. Favorite things: photography, exploring new places, long walks with the dogs.

What Kate says: Scott is the funniest person I know. He tells the best stories and keeps me and everyone around him smiling. He has a calm, comforting personality, and is incredibly patient. This shows up with me, with our dogs, and with our families and friends. He gives amazing hugs, and is the person I want to talk to when I am feeling stressed or just need friend. He has a lot of really cool hobbies and I know he will inspire a child to find what makes them happy, too. He likes biking, has started a record collection, loves to read, and has become an excellent photographer. He takes all of the pictures and family gatherings, but also likes to take them around the city or on vacation.

About Kate

Family: Kate grew up in Michigan with her mom, dad and older sister. He sister and brother-in-law now live near Chicago with their two sons (our 6 and 10 year old nephews), so her mom and dad visit every month.

Occupation: Kate is a teacher and learning specialist at a school in our neighborhood. She has been working as a teacher for 15 years, and she takes a lot of pride in helping students and families get the most out of school.

Favorite things: days by the pool or lake, reading, concerts, good conversation over a delicious meal, our dogs

What Scott says: Kate is the most selfless person I know. She’s the friend you can share anything with and not worry about her judging you. She’s the teacher any parent would want their child to have because she’s fiercely dedicated to her students, but also knows when to share a laugh with them. Her laugh is so infectious that I can’t wait to tell her a joke or funny story just so I get to hear it. Kate is definitely the organized one, whether it’s scheduling family vacations, getting a group of friends together for dinner, or making sure we’ve packed enough snacks for an upcoming road trip. She is also definitely the person you want on your team for trivia night.

Building Our Family Through Adoption

Our Letter To You

We met in college, and sometimes that feels like forever ago, but a lot of the time we still feel like the kids we were when we met. Now that we are both in our mid-30s, so much about our lives has changed — we got married 11 years ago, we’ve moved, changed jobs, traveled thousands of miles, grown our household by two dogs –but what hasn’t changed is that we’re each other’s best friend and biggest cheerleader.

We have been so many places together, near and far. We’re also big on traditions. Every other year, we go to Hawaii with Kate’s whole family. It is our favorite place and we can’t wait to share it with a child. We also travel to Kate’s family’s cottage in northern Michigan every summer that she has been going to her whole life. We are both pretty silly which means our house is filled with laughter as a result of goofy things we say or do, TV shows or movies that make us laugh until we cry, or shenanigans with our dogs. You might also find us singing karaoke, playing board games, going to the pool, or to the movies. We like watching and attending sporting events, especially Cubs baseball and Michigan football.

We have lived in the same neighborhood near Lake Michigan for 11 years. It is the perfect mix of quiet and fun. There are two parks on our block, and we are right by the lakefront path. We try to take advantage of where we live whenever the weather allows! Even in the colder months, we still like living within walking distance of most of what we like to do: walking by the lake bringing a blanket and books for an afternoon relaxing at the park going out for weekend brunches at our favorite restaurants holidays and get-togethers with family and friends being less than a mile from Wrigley Field for baseball games and concerts We feel settled and so happy to call Chicago home, especially our family-friendly neighborhood.

Last, but not least, where do we start with Stanley and Kona? They have brought so much happiness to our lives. They are sweet, playful, and full of love. We like taking them for walks, including stops for ice cream, letting them run around the dog beach, or just relaxing at home. They don’t shed, so we encourage a lot of snuggling, and they love people of all sizes. We are so excited to see how they love and protect a human brother or sister! We hope you get a sense of how much we love each other and also how excited we are to become parents. We are ready, and hopeful, for a child to join our family. We know this is a big decision, and we want to be on this path with you; we will honor you, respect you and value you as the mother of your baby. Thank you for getting to know us, too.

Our Parenting Style

We are a team, and that is how we plan to approach parenting. We have been partners in life through ups and downs, and we plan to always communicate openly and honestly with each other to create a home that is loving, safe and fun. We value learning AND playing to help children grow. We want to provide experiences for a child to learn about the world around them, including exploring all of the cool places Chicago has to offer families. Family is everything. We want our child to feel like they have a big circle of support around them. We want to share our traditions, while always honoring the way our family was built. That means we will probably learn a lot along the way, too. One of the best things about being in a relationship with someone for almost 18 years is that we know each other really well. Kate is a planner, and she is prepared for any situation that comes her way, and one of the first words people use to describe her is dependable. As a special education teacher, she is caring, understanding and kind. Scott is incredibly patient and has an amazing sense of humor. He will be a great example for a child, and he will be involved – and probably taking pictures – every step of the way.

Our Story

Our Story

We live in a two-story home in the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago. One of the things we like the most about our home is that it includes a fenced in play-area, is close to parks, and is only a five minute walk to the lakefront path.

We are working to put our nursery together. Twinkle Twinkle Little Store is a favorite lullaby, so the sheets and decorations we picked out include the sun, the moon, and the stars. The nursery is right across the hallway from our room, but we also got a bassinet so the baby can sleep safely and comfortably in our room, too.

In addition to our immediate families, we have many generations of our families very close to us. Scott’s grandparents, aunts and uncles, and cousins all live in Chicago; there are currently four great-grandchildren, and everyone is excited about another child joining the crew. We also spend a lot of time with Kate’s family since her sister lives in a suburb of Chicago. Our nephews can’t wait to go swimming and watch movies with their cousin.

Stanley is nine years old. We got him when he was a puppy, and he changed our lives for the better. He has a protective, snuggly personality; he really just wants to be with his people and his canine sister at all times. Stanley’s favorites: playing fetch with a tennis ball, being carried like a baby, taking long afternoon naps, peanut butter. Kona is two years old and has brought a new energy to our family. She keeps us all on our toes, including Stanley. She is super goofy. She will throw toys around and catch them, loves to play keep away, and loves kids. Kona’s favorites: running around the dog park, laying RIGHT next to Stanley on the couch, having her front paws scratched.
