Tarah & Dave

– Utah –

Introduction

We love to tell jokes and laugh real hard at anything and everything! We are known for quoting movies and having fun-filled nights with board games and good food. We are super social and thrive most when we are around people. We definitely feel happiest when our home is filled with family and friends. We are very active and involved with things like going to the zoo, water parks, the aquarium, and hanging out with cousins. We love things like camping and traveling, as well. We also feel strongly that we should have time in our home together, which we feel like it’s our safe-haven. We love to have movie nights, read good books, and just relax. We feel like it is important to have a good balance of both. Please feel free to ask us any questions!

About Tarah

Tarah is spunky. She likes to keep things fun and has a gift for laughing super easy at everything. Tarah has an outgoing personality and makes friends very easily. She was a 3rd grade teacher and she thrives in any environment where she can teach and help people. Tarah has done some pretty wonderful things in her life, but none of it compares to being a mom! Elliana opened up a part of her heart that she didn’t know existed and she loves it! Tarah wants to be at home with our kids to experience it all: every tooth and every first step. She wants to be the one that teaches them right from wrong, and especially, to be a good person. She feels like it is what she was born to do, and has loved every minute of it!

About Dave

If I were to pick a word that describes Dave (besides AMAZING), it would be humble. Dave doesn’t let life get him down. He sees a mistake and he fixes it. He allows life to teach him what he needs to do to be better, then he does it. He doesn’t judge others, but genuinely loves them. And EVERYONE loves Dave! I am pretty sure my own family loves him more than they love me! He is ever patient and ever kind and never yells. He is such a good dad and husband! He understands kids so well and how to get down on their level. It is truly an amazing gift! Dave is also HILARIOUS! His sense of humor has gotten us through many difficult situations in life. When everything seems to be falling apart, Dave starts cracking jokes.

Building Our Family Through Adoption

Our Letter To You

Adoption is very dear to our hearts. I once worked with a young lady, named Dayana, who wanted to place her child for adoption. I felt inspired to tell her about my best friend who was hoping to adopt. After weeks of prayer, Dayana decided my best friend was supposed to be her daughter’s mother. It was a very humbling experience for me. But it was also one of the hardest things I have ever watched someone I love go through! Dayana loved her daughter but she sacrificed her desires, to put her daughter’s needs first. It was the purest love I have ever seen and the greatest sacrifice I have ever known. It changed my heart forever! And ever since, I have always wanted to adopt. We have struggled with infertility for over 2 years now, and it has been hard! I have PCOS, and they are unsure if I will ever be able to have more children. So we prayed about it and we’ve felt it is time to adopt. We do not feel like it is a coincidence that we are adopting at this time. We sincerely feel like this is how it was meant to happen all long. We are very open to an open adoption. We’d love to send emails, texts, videos, and picture-updates. We would love to have “a Dayana” in our lives! But we also understand that your openness may vary, and we respect that. We want you to feel comfortable and we will work with your needs. Understand that no matter what your preference of openness, we will always speak of you, and your family, with the love and respect you deserve, and about the sacrifices you’ve made. We can’t wait to meet you and get to know you better.

Our Parenting Style

As an elementary school teacher, I LOVED to have fun with my students! But I learned very quickly that you can’t have fun without discipline, or things get out of control. Both Dave and I feel like this is true with parenting. We love to work hard and play harder, but we are not afraid to give Ellie a time-out if she is not behaving well, even, and especially in public. It is important to have fun, but it is even more important to be a good person, make good decisions, and be kind to others. As part of our “bedtime routine” each night, we teach a 5-10 minute lesson on how to be a better, kinder person. It is one of our absolute, most favorite things to teach Ellie about. As a teacher, I also learned that every child is different. What might work for one, might not work for another, so it’s important to know that child’s needs and interests, and how to reach or discipline them in a way they respond best to. We also do not hesitate to involve prayer in our decisions as parents, especially if we are not sure what to do. We think taking a step back and praying and pondering and researching the situation can make a huge difference. We are not perfect parents, by any means, but we do try with all our hearts to be good ones! We don’t hesitate to apologize to Ellie when we do something wrong, or admit to her that we made a mistake. When we are firm in our discipline, we try to make sure to show an abundance of love afterward. And we talk about why we did what we did. Parenting can be tricky! But we love it more than anything!

Our Story

Our Story

OUR HOME

We live in an adorable 4 bedroom home in a quaint town in Utah. We absolutely love where we live because the people are super friendly, there are plenty of parks to play at, and lots of little kids to play with. The neighbor kids are always knocking on our door to see if Ellie can play, and we LOVE that. We have a big fenced backyard, with swings and a playhouse, that they have a lot of fun with. Our neighbors are super generous, and always willing to help us with anything: lending tools or cutting down trees. There are many young families here that we have play-dates, parties, and park days with. There are also at least 6 families that go to our neighborhood church who have also adopted, and they have helped us so much!

OUR FAMILY

We both come from big families and are very involved in their lives. Some of Ellie’s best friends are her cousins, and no one gets her laughing as hard as they do. We make an extra effort to see everyone regularly, with visits, at holidays, or family reunions. Nothing brings us greater joy than to see Ellie make memories with the people we love most. When it comes to our “little family,” we just love to be together! It can be at a children’s museum or just building blanket forts at home, but we try to make each other laugh wherever we go, and make it fun. We are big into education, books, and teaching Ellie good morals. She also goes to an amazing preschool, and we also make time for hobbies she loves, like dance classes or swim lessons.

OUR PETS

We have one dog named Benny. He is a 16 pound (small) cairn terrier, who we all love to pieces! Benny was our “baby before our baby,” and helped train us a little for parenthood. He is very good with children and Ellie adores him! He is “her Benny.” He is such a good sport and even lets us dress him up! We take him on walks at our nearby parks, with us when we go camping, and to pick up Ellie from preschool. He is our little buddy! We love our Benny Boy!

THIS IS US

There is never a dull moment in the Nelson house! Both Dave and I like to crack jokes and laugh about life. We try to make even the littlest things enjoyable for Ellie. We believe it is not so much WHAT you are doing, but HOW you are doing it. We may “just” be watching a movie at home, but you better believe that we are popping popcorn, buying a special treat, and turning out the lights (just like the movie theater) while we do it. We don’t just “bake” in the kitchen, but we do it with Disney music, singing at the top of our lungs, and dancing our hearts out! That’s how life should be! Full of adventure and fun! But mainly, full of EACH OTHER!
