Sally is a gentle soul who loves being a mother with all her heart. She is truly my best friend. She is someone who loves and respects others and loves helping people out. I often get a text from her asking me who I think she should take a meal to because she just wants to do something nice for someone. She loves water color painting, dabbling in music lessons, and plants. She likes trying new foods and exploring beautiful places. But what I love the most is that her family always comes first for her. She starts almost every day sitting on the couch reading books to our littlest kids and finishes every day in the same way. She loves reading on her own too. Sally has a deep love for God and relies on Him for guidance and support every day. She inspires me to be a better husband and father. I can’t imagine life without her. She knew early in our marriage that adoption was how we should grow our family, and she has never looked back. Her children are her best friends, and she is great at encouraging them in their own interests and pursuits.

Building Our Family Through Adoption

Our Letter To You

Hello Friend,

We want you to know that we love and admire you for your courage and strength in this incredibly hard situation you’re facing. We don’t know details, but we have gone through this experience many times and have developed sweet friendships with many of our children’s birthmoms. We have learned that every experience is different and hard in different ways. We want to be here to love and support you as much as you need us.

We have been married 20 years now and from the beginning were unable to have children. We never found a reason why, but early in our marriage, Sally had the strong feeling that we should pursue adoption. It has been a beautiful experience for us as we have grown our family this way. Neither of us would change anything if we could do it again. We have 6 wonderful children who have all come into our home at birth. Adoption is a deep part of who we are and is one of the things we love most about our family!

We offered to have open adoptions with all our 6 birthmoms, and 3 of the 6 have become close friends. We have close contact with one of the bio grandmas and the other 2 birthmoms chose to limit contact for personal reasons. We are open to figuring out together with you what is best for you and your baby.

From the very beginning of our family, we have felt that 7 kids was the right number for us. We love being a big family! Each of our kids has unique and awesome characteristics that make being a big family fun and a blessing.

We know that a giant family might seem a bit overwhelming, but what we have learned over the years is that the bigger the family, the more love we have to give. This final child in our family is going to have more love and support than they know what to do with! We feel so blessed to be on this journey again, and if you feel we may be a fit for you and your baby, please reach out to us. We can’t wait to get to know you and hopefully be a source of comfort, peace, and hope for you in this journey.

Love,

Joe and Sally Davidson

Our Parenting Style

We are generally chill parents. At this point, we’ve tried pretty much everything. We are just beginning to explore the challenges of teenage parenting. We often tell our older two kids that we are sorry for not being perfect parents, and they get to be the lucky ones we practice on.
The most important lessons we have learned and try our best to apply to this point are that loving our kids and creating a safe space for them is more important than anything else. As for discipline, with the younger kids we use redirection, asking them to try again, and when needed, time outs. With the older kids, we focus more on discussing what behaviors aren’t working and losing privileges. We try to be consistent with consequences, but when we see good improvement and sincere trying we also try to just forgive and move on. Our main goal is to keep an open relationship with each of the kids that will help them feel they can trust us and come to us when they have tough things going on in their lives. One of the best things we have done is to have one-0n-one interviews with the kids on Sunday afternoons at least a couple times a month. They get our undivided attention and can talk about anything they want. It’s a time we also discuss their personal goals, concerns, how school is going, and challenges facing them. That has helped so much to keep us all on the same page and to give them time to share what is and isn’t working for them in our family. We often remind our kids that they need to be there for each other and be each other’s best friends. And they really do a great job with that.

Our Story

Our Home

We love our home. We moved to Farmington a little over 3 years ago and the change to a smaller town has been so amazing for our family! Farmington is a town with tons of opportunity to be outdoors. There are walking, jogging and biking trails as well as mountain and BMX biking skills parks. We head one hour North into the Southern Rockies and ski, hike, and camp in the mountains. Our house is on one of the many hills in town, so we get to see beautiful sunsets each night. We have a fun yard with an in-ground trampoline, pickleball and basketball sport court, a large garden area around our chicken and duck run. We also have a nice grassy space to play on together. Our home has 6 bedrooms and a couple large gathering areas. Joe enjoys some carpentry and has built bunkbeds, book shelves, end tables, and is currently working on a large family dinner table. We truly were blessed to find such an awesome place for our large family when we moved to Farmington. There are a lot of other families with kids in our neighborhood which has been awesome for our kids to play and explore with friends.

Our Nursery

We have 6 bedrooms in our home, and we play musical rooms with our kids, usually at their request. They’ve all taken turns sharing which has been so great for sibling relationships. Our current nursery is right next to our master bedroom and has a couple of windows with awesome morning sunlight. Our plan currently is to have the baby in the nursery alone until she is sleeping through the night and then have our 5 year old girl, Annie, who is sooo excited to be a big sister, share with her. Plans can change, but that’s our current thought.

Our Pets

We are becoming the crazy pet people! We now have a dog (a sweet old golden retriever), a tiny turtle, a beta fish named Bumblebee, 2 parakeets, 7 chickens, and 4 ducks. It seems like at least 2-3 children request a new pet each year. We often say no or else we would be overrun, but we really do enjoy having animals be a part of our family and our kids’ growing up. The chickens and ducks give us eggs, too, so these days that’s amazing!

Our Family

Caleb (16) is our relaxed, affectionate oldest. He is the best at giving his mother hugs anytime and sometimes all the time. He is so great at playing with his younger siblings! He’s also our musician and fills the house with his own creations on the piano, melodica (ever heard of that?!), guitar, handpan, and really any instrument he can get his hands on. He started driving this year and has been an awesome help getting siblings where they need to go.

Ella (14) is our rockstar big sister who helps us with fashion, decorating, music, dance moves, and generally staying up with the times. We love her spunk and passion for life. She’s an athlete and definitely her little sister’s favorite person. She wants to be an interior decorator and a mom someday. When Caleb and Ella get singing and dancing together, they could win any reality talent show, however neither is very interested in performing in public. They have been best friends since the day Ella was born.

Keelan (12) is our intelligent, thoughtful, hard-working son. He has got an awesome imagination and can build a killer fort for the littles. He loves mountain biking, jogging in the mornings with mom, drawing, painting, and is a hard-core bookworm. He loves friends, camping, and is also getting into hiking the southern Rockies with Dad. Keelan thinks deeply about life and ideas, and despite being a 12 year old boy, he still loves talking with mom at night. He introduced the 5-second hug to the family years ago which still is one of our best solutions to conflict at home.

Riley (9) is the best helper and plays like his life depends on it. He is definitely the best at getting out of chores. Whenever he gets caught, he flashes the best smile, and it’s hard to stay mad at him for long. He’s our sensitive soul and can snuggle up to listen to a book with Mom or Dad all day and sometimes late into the night. He is our goer and doer and wants to be a part of everything! He’s Dad’s best helper when it comes to outdoor work in the garden, mowing the lawn, or digging holes. We can see him becoming a general contractor, landscaper, or culinary artist someday. He is the first kid to show up and last to leave whenever Sally starts to cook and bake. He loves airsoft and wrestling, and if he could, he would spend all day playing with his siblings or friends.

Annie (5) is our sweet youngest daughter. She also has some fire in her soul and loves being in charge. She is mom’s awesome helper in the kitchen making everything from homemade bread to cookies to empanadas or anything else we are trying out. Annie is a fast runner and bike rider. She loves being outside in the grass and sand but definitely isn’t a fan of prickles. She loves listening to books and is starting to learn to read and do math which she is very proud of. She loves her Aunt Melissa (Sally’s younger sister) and all of her cousins. She is our social butterfly and will talk with anyone. She has a sweet streak and seems to know just when you need a big hug or kiss. She can’t wait to be a big sister!

Isaac (4) is all boy and can play all day with Riley and Annie. He never passes up a chance to wrestle with Dad, and unlike all our other kids, he can handle being tickled for 5 minutes straight. We are pretty sure he just loves laughing more than anything else in the world. Cars are a close second, though, and he can do car parades and pretend outside, inside, in the tub, in the shower, at church, and anywhere else he can sneak a hot wheels car to. Isaac is a good friend to everyone and has more energy than anyone else in the family. He could spend all day bouncing on the trampoline, digging in the sand, climbing on rocks, or playing pickleball or ping pong  with Dad. He is going to be the funnest big brother this world has ever known.
